Hope for Food Allergy Sufferers

16 03 2009

Did everyone see ABC News last night?  There was an interesting story about some recent research at Duke University in which scientists successfully vanquished severe food allergies (to peanuts, in this case) by administering progressively larger doses of peanuts to children (I think they call the technique “immunotherapy”).  I don’t think it’s all that surprising that the technique works, given that they’ve been doing the same thing with other types of allergies for quite a while, but I do think it ought to make us think twice about cordoning off certain foods for the first however many years of our children’s lives.  In its story last night, ABC News also quoted the Harvard medical professor I’ve mentioned before who is campaigning against this culture of fear surrounding potential food allergens.
